I want to start off by saying that I hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving. It’s always fun to get the family together and I know that I had a good time. Speaking of Thanksgiving I wanted to share with you the apple pie that I made this year. I’ve been making this pie for a couple of years and have found out that it’s quite versatile. What I really like about it is whether you’re making it the day of or the night before, it doesn’t take a lot of time.
What you’ll need for the filling:
6 peeled apples
3/4 cup of sugar
2 tablespoons of all purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon of salt
1/8 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon of lemon juice
This is what it should look like when you are done. I chose Granny Smith apples because they have a good tartness and hold up well to baking. I also cut my apple into squares but you can cut them however you like. I did this the night before and I like to do that because it gives the flavors time to meld together and the apples can soak up all the juices.
The next day when I went to put it together, the first thing I did was preheat the oven to 425 degrees. I then got my pie pan, it’s supposed to be 9 inches but I couldn’t find any when I went to the grocery store so I used 8 3/4. All of the filling did fit, but I wouldn’t recommend using a smaller size pan than that. Next I got my pie crust and laid it in the bottom of the pie pan. This time around I didn’t have the time to make my own crust so I used the Pillsbury pre-made crust. It comes with two crusts, one for the top and one for thee bottom, and I highly recommend it. After that, I pulled the filling out of the fridge and put it in the pan and topped it with the other crust. After I fitted the top crust, I sealed and fluted the edges and cut a design in it.
The next step is to put it in the oven for 40-45 minutes or until the apples are tender and the crust is golden brown. After the first 15-20 minutes pull out the pie and wrap the crust in 2-3 inches of foil. That will prevent the crust from burning while the pie finishes baking. Once the pie is done take it out of the oven and on to a cooling rack.
It took my pie 40 minutes to bake and become golden brown. All in all I’m really happy with the way it turned out and I wouldn’t do anything different with it.
